Moffitt here I come!

For those of you that don't yet know, I was selected for the media relations internship at Moffitt Cancer Center. I have orientation on Monday and start bright and early Wednesday morning. WOOHOO!

And though I wasn't chosen for Bateman, I am marketing chair for PRSSA - so I help out Mr. Nate with all of his super special marketing efforts.

And I'm going to Conference in Detroit in like a month!

More on that as it comes up!

Internships and the Like

Okay, so I decided not to seize the opportunity with XFC. I went to their website and did some research and turns out I would just be handing out flyers and stuff, and there was no real set program as far as an internship is concerned. I did, however, contact Nancy Johnson from Moffitt and she is still in need of an intern for the fall. I sent her some writing samples yesterday, and I'm looking forward to hearing from her soon.

More on this battle for the internships as it comes up... And Dr. Werder said that Bateman should be decided and announced by tomorrow.

AAAH, what I would do for that opportunity.

PRSSA

Okay so I don't know why I waited so freaking long to join PRSSA... I guess it was a little bit of everything I went through last year with moving and relationships and all that jazz, but regardless, I joined.

Today we had the Open House meeting and there were a TON of people there. I joined the marketing committee, where I'll hopefully be able to contribute some of what I've learned doing the marketing for Charley's, and apply it to this organization.

I read up on conference and I'm trying to find plane tickets and figure out how much it'll end up costing me - but I definitely plan on going.

What I'm most excited about out of all of this is the Bateman competition. I made it perfectly crystal clear to all of the faculty involved that I am very interested in being part of the Bateman team. How cool would it be to earn the APR credits through practical application from start to finish, not just through simulations in the classroom?? Only five students are selected, so hopefully I am one of them. Regardless, it's an incredible opportunity, and if I'm not selected, I'll definitely learn something in the process.

Let's see, what else? I signed up for Pair with a Professional - a job shadowing opportunity where you get to pair up with a pro and boggle their mind with questions, get a real glimpse of what life is like in the biz and obviously, a bit more experience.

Tomorrow at 1p.m. I have an interview with the President of XFC - Xtreme Fighting Championships. Similar to UFC, but it's founded here in Tampa, and they have a gym on Nebraska. I found the opportunity through a customer that I waited on on Friday at work, he knows Jack Glasure, head of the Glasure Group, a really awesome PR firm here in Tampa. I mentioned what I was studying in school and he said he knows a lot of people in the biz and to contact him with my resume and all that jazz. I did, and no kidding, 15 minutes later I was setting up an interview with one of the Glasure Group's clients, XFC.

More on that after the interview!

Goals and the like

So, my name is Sydney Owen. I am a senior majoring in public relations here at good ole USF. I am not entirely sure what I'll be doing with this expensive sheet of paper upon graduation, but I fully intend on using the qualities that I have to better someone, or something.

Qualities including my innate ability to read people, amongst others. I have been waiting tables and slinging drinks in order to fund said expensive degree, and in my time behind the bar and carrying a tray, I have fine-tuned my people-reading skills. I figure that this will end up being a great skill when dealing with my future employers and future clients. If they are the silent professional type, I will have to tone down my outgoing personality. But if they're willing to laugh and smile through the experience, then we'll get along just fine.

In addition to being able to read people, I am also very well spoken. I take great pride in being able to speak the English language correctly and tend to be a bit of a grammar Nazi..

That's all I have for now, more on how wonderful I am later.

You know you love me,
xoxo Sydney

PS Attention all Gossip Girl fans: for the record, if you'll go back to the days of Xanga (yes, I had a xanga), I have been signing blogs with the tagline above way before Gossip Girl was even a thought. Just clearing that up. :)
